On January 1st sauerkraut with bacon, all year no shortage of money

Last year we read this saying in a column of culinary journalist Evert Wilbrink. It inspired us then to approach the financial crisis from a this angle and we invited some same soul mates who also shared a tear in their stock trousers. And see, they had a good appetite eating the delicious sauerkraut with bacon of Mrs. Peters and it works! Because 2009 was a very good year in the stock market and a lot of pain was eliminated. It was also so cosy that we decided on the spot to make a tradition out of it.

And so after the New Year’s Concert in Vienna and before the Ski Jumping in Garmisch Partenkirchen 10 friends passed by for a healthy meal. There were 2 more guests than last year and it was a little bit too much for our familiar kitchen table so we had to borrow one from Hotel Newport which is located in the same apartment complex. This is one of those pleasant benefits.

Mrs. Peters had outdone herself with not just a nice appetizer of Jambon Iberico brought from Spain (our own pig leg), but especially with a delicious mashed potatoes with sauerkraut from the steamer. Also the choice, next to bacon, of sausage from the Hema and ones out of our favorite butcher shop Stut from Blaricum. As an aperitif a Cremant dÁlsace of Paul Zinck, a wine together with the sauerkraut Gruner Veltliner 2008 from Berger and as a red wine Cotes du Rhone 2007 from Domaine Saint Martin of the Hema. You see 2x Hema. The fear of the crisis is still there!
